Traditional cultures view aging as a time of wisdom, reflection and generativity. As boomers age, we will challenge the stereotyped view of elders as a problem, and address the real problems: our denial of aging and the institutions that inhibit ongoing growth and ease for elders. Many solutions are called for as we shift current paradigms of aging. Mindfulness-Based Elder Care is one of these.

Lucia McBee, LCSW, MPH, CYI, has worked with elders and their caregivers for over 25 years in a wide range of community, research, and institutional settings. Since her graduation from Columbia University's School of Social Work and Public Health, she has developed a pioneering practice using mindfulness, and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to improve the quality of life in community and nursing home settings.  Ms. McBee has successfully integrated these practices into her work with elders, their families, and the staff.

Ms. McBee has participated in professional training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction at the Center for Mindfulness, and in Mind/Body/Spirit Medicine at the Center for Mind/Body Medicine. She has published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals. Ms. McBee became a certified Kripalu yoga teacher in July 2008.

Her presentations have included national and international conferences. She regularly presents to and consults with institutional and community direct-care providers. Mindfulness-Based Elder Care, her book based on her innovations in adapting mindfulness and complementary and alternative medicine for elders and their caregivers, is now available at:

"Dear Lucia: What can I say? That your guidance and your wonderful tape kept me alive and helped me to become the real person I am today. Without your help I never would have reached my 90th birthday. And had the courage to get on a plane after my dear son passed and go to Florida where I am going to live. Your wonderful tapes that I had the good sense to go to bed with every night and wake up with every morning for the last 3 years." Dorothy C., 90 year old participant in the Wellness by telephone group

"There are many things I learned in this group that I can and will apply and live with the rest of my life." Family Caregiver
